Menu Planning

Its been for awhile now that we had struggled with putting decent meal on the table due to either lack of funding or lack of planning. I highly recommend planning your menus for at least a week. We started this process in October. I planned the meals out for 2 weeks to coordinate with payday. On payday I went shopping and for $135.00 dollars we had dinner for 14 days!

This months we planned for the entire month but only bought three weeks worth of food for $167.00. Some of the items we will be cooking we have a little extra to freeze for a future date as we are all terrible about leftovers so-to-speak.

This weeks menu

Saturday ~ Pulled Pork BBQ with Cole Slaw and smiley face potato/fries
Sunday ~ Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Veggies
Monday ~ Spaghetti with Meat sauce
Tuesday ~ Fish, Rice and Veggies
Wednesday ~ Taco Night
Thursday ~ Mac & Cheese, Hot Dogs, Baked Beans and Veggies
Friday ~ Hamburgers, Baked Potato, Veggies

I realize that this is not from scratch cooking and some nights are specifically meals that I won't eat but since I am working - I won't be here and the "guys" can just enjoy what they would like.

I can tell you that the pulled pork was absolutely amazing. The pork roast had been cooking all day in the crock pot and the last two hours added the BBQ sauce - made the cole slaw dressing and mixed it with the slaw - and OMG to die for.

Tomorrow's meatloaf is also going to be pretty good - but maybe not quite as good as the BBQ today. The best past is that we had BBQ Pork left over for 2 more meals - winning!!

I love that some of them are quick meals to fit into our schedule - that some meals I can start in the morning (crock pot) and they'll have dinner with little work - and that in some instances my kids know exactly what is on the menu and I don't have to tell them "I don't know!".

New Pattern Release

I have decided to release 2 of my hat designs - the goat and the hippo. I will possibly release more in the future, but for now I think this is good right?

If you purchase the pattern and have any questions - I am available via e-mail most of the time hippiescreations@gmail.com

Hello, how are you?

Me? Oh, I am fine. I am busy!
With what?
Oh, busy with life (work, kids, family, crochet, wood burning, friends) and not all in this order.
I want to commit more time to write about the doings here, and its not like I lack the topics of our creative fun life - but I often lack the time and if I don't lack the time I kinda sorta lack the motivation because I may just be taking a break from all that stuff called life.

So here I am. A week ago overwhelmed with orders (Star Wars Set, Animal hats, Panda Wood Burning) and I am still working on a thing or two trying to get them done.

This is hopefully what the Somerset Patriots Mascot Sparkee kind of looks like. If nothing else he is definitely one good looking Schnauzer, don't you think? Anyway, I love how he came out!

This is Slider - the other Mascot from the same team. I think I came close on this as well. He's one fun looking critter if you ask me.
This guys made me realize that all the unfinished hat bases - well need to be finished. So I am hoping after I finish a Giraffe Set (Hat, Scarf and Mittens) I will have time to do that.. and all those other unfinished projects.

There's also this guy. I will need to darken a few more areas and then polyurethane it to protect it. I hope the lady that will receive this for a Christmas present will just LOVE this. I hear that she has nothing like this in her Panda collection - so cool right?

Well I am off to work on that Giraffe Set while taking care of the laundry before heading to work later.
Have a fabulous day!

Finding my rhythm

So yea I've been once again slacking in the blogging department. I really want to share my world with you but sometimes my world gets so demanding that I either forget or am too tired to formulate a coherent thought. So I am going to try something new and see how it goes..but no promises :) I hope you understand aye?

One of the reasons I am terribly tired lately is our new family member. Isn't he just the freaking cutest thing ever? He's a Beagle-Giant Schnauzer Mix with the name of Sgt. Pepper (or Sarge). I do love this face but boy did I forget how much work those little adorable puppies are BUT he is helping me get back on track with running and exercising and I am totally ok with that!
And when I am not playing mommy to Sgt Pepper - I am mommy to other human children that need help with homework - or reviewing the JRTOC steps just learn. There's dinner to be cooked and orders to crochet. A house to clean and coffee to drink. I am also helping my best friend get her children off to school in the mornings as she is heading into work - a school bus driver - something I couldn't do.. but then is that any different from my job - ya know me the in-home therapist? Both us throwing ourselves into the midst of children's lives.
NUTS!

So in all this craziness I am trying to find my rhythm and some days are better than others and most days I am not getting done the things I want to get done - ugh! And while I can stick to my work schedule I struggle to stick to another schedule at home. I don't know if pre-writing and scheduling posts will help me ... sigh

Well there is housework, coffee drinking and crocheting to be done - perhaps not in this order but needing to be done nonetheless :)

I feel like I am cheating ...

ahh so my first love is and always has been crochet. I have done this since oh my eldest was still in-uterus (he's 20 now). Over the years I have experimented and tried and crafted... and love anything that allows my creativity to flow - but I always keep coming back to crocheting. I do believe however that experimenting and exploring is a must (for all) - even for the ones that say they don't have talent. It's not always about talent but about the creating process itself.. and just because you cannot draw does not mean you can't be good at something else... right? RIGHT!

So we went to Barnes & Nobles not too long ago to exchange a book my love bought me and I already had. I came across "Stray Sock sewing, too" and "Sockology" and I have been going nuts with them. I have bought more books as well since then.. and just love love love the concept of sock critters.. but also the notion to combine socks and crochet.. or use the patterns to guide my crochet work instead of socks.. I have lots of yarn.. not enough socks :)

Anyway I am having lots of fun creating the critters but needed to take a break to fulfill some orders.. I have in the last week created a rat hat, shipped of a horseshoe flower that my other half created and am in the process of crocheting his & hers slippers hopefully to ship out tomorrow or Saturday - and then its back to sock critters - maybe - I do have an event coming up in October and should review what I want to take with me!

The New Homestead

So we have been living in the new digs since August 1st officially... we barely got all the paint on the walls and make-shift kitchen in and well a functioning bathroom... in just over a week I will be celebrating a birthday (mine) and our house warming.. and we are not quite ready.. so this weekend it will be busting a groove or two to get it all together.. in other words.. empty the storage with the remainder of the furniture and try to get rid of all the boxes that are still remaining stacked in the house!

The room that was the first to take on its shape was the library!

We are using dresser drawers for shelving!!! I just love this idea because well it just seems to make sense to me :) and there is enough room for knick knacks and paintings!

And above one of our sliding glass doors (we have two) we used crates that I had painted in the past. The space between the grates on the bottom row will be home to some paintings.

Here's one more view of the long tall wall - the shelve above the trim used to be one piece... :) cut it in half and its wide enough for all the paperback books of his! This is so far my favorite space.. its also my office/workspace for the moment.. after this weekend I should be able to share more pictures of the house and how its all coming together quite nicely.. and then.. well then it will be time to take the outside ;)

Little Chibi Critters everywhere

I recently came across a pattern over at nerdgurumi, and I am in love!!!
It has been a blast creating these little critters and I have more in my head but need to find the time to create. Sometimes work just gets in the way ;)
Here is the bunny in pink - just imagine all the different colors this one could come in ...he's cute and small and measures just about 4 inches (not including the ears).

And then there is this guy - just a blue little dude. I don't know that he would look this good in another color - but I will certainly give it a try here in the next few days. He just looks fresh and fun!

This little guy with his big eyes is curious about the world. He just loves to see what's out there and wants to explore.
This little alien landed on our planet to make new friends. Know anyone that would like to be his friend?

To order any of these you can go to my etsy shop - or you can e-mail me

Update in a flash

This months busy is THE word in our vocabulary.

To recap the start - well there's been 4th of July. It started with a parade in the morning. We went home chilled in the cool air of the A/C and then later that day went to see the fireworks.

Then there was my oldest son's wedding! And it was stunning.
The best part is I know  that it went exactly how they have envisioned it.

My daughter-in-law - so beautiful .. love them.

They are now heading back to his duty station to begin their life together!

Then we are planning on not only fixing as much as we can on the new house - BUT we are moving in before the months is over... aaahhhhh
I am hoping to have a few more things to write about over here Peaks of Inspiration

Fit in work hours - crochet hours (I am current working on a new summer top pattern)  and family time.

Seasonal Notes Sunday

Summer time can be a quest for crochet folks! And who would have thought that people still create bikini's and the like. This isn't just a thing of the 70's.

It wasn't too long ago I received a comment from a lady who thought crochet was out of style. Her comment perplexed me a little: " I didn't think people still crochet!"

Say what?
LOTS of people crochet - we have our own little underground... no wait its above ground.. we are not that hard to find!

Anyway, I do have a bikini on my list of things - I've been sketching out some designs of clothing - now to find time and less heat to work!

Some other samples of summer crochet :)

Don't these flip flops look fun?

I love this tunic -

And I love this... Bandana-Kerchief type

Weird Wednesday

I like the weird - the odd - the "omg what were you thinking?" But even I find myself to have some limits..

I love crochet designs from back in the day - old things become new but I find this a bit much and don't think I would want to revamp this - its like yarn bombing a person?

I like the shirt... but the pants? Perhaps in a simple solid color!

Every time I see this picture... I giggle a little because I know 30+ years ago - this was totally in.. right?

And then there is this.. I love people and their creativity. I love color and self-expression - but I cannot wrap my mind around this one... I am trying... its not working..

And I have certainly crochet some weird things in my 20+ years like this weird ninja turtle hat my son was bugging me for .. yea no pictures :)

this is it for today's Weird Wednesday episode
now back to your regular program!
